God and Geeks: Time Sink

You know, I planned out a few summer goals in one of my previous posts, and have not been very good about keeping up with some of them, especially the programming ones. Do you know what I’ve been doing besides programming and working on software? Playing video games, and not only that, but feeling an intense need for improvement and dedication in those video games. I blame Street Fighter.

Recommended Reading: Chesterton - Orthodoxy

This book has been much more my speed, even though I am only a few chapters in. Direct quotes ahead, captain! <“Bold Quotes are from Chesterton”>

“I will not call it my philosophy; for I did not make it. God and humanity made it; and it made me” - I love this attitude. This is reflected throughout his writings, and he has several terse, simply stated sentences that summarize the truth so well. Many philosophers and seekers take on a hipster mentality. Clearly, the truth has not yet been found, otherwise humanity would have accepted it! So we must keep finding new explanations, new reasons for being, in the hopes that we will find what we seek. “Like them I tried to be some 10 minutes in advance of the truth. And I found that I was 1800 years behind it. I was punished in the fittest and funniest way, for I have kept my truths: but I have discovered, not that they were not truths, but simply that they were not mine.”

Anonymous asked: Fear and Trembling is written under a pseudonym. Kierkegaard denied that the views expressed by his pseudonyms could be taken to match his own. That should give reason to believe that when Johannes de Silentio says he cannot be or understand a knight of faith, that's going to be integral to the purpose of F&T. If you ever reread it, focus on figuring out why de Silentio claims not to be able to understand Abraham and the text will open up even richer themes. (Biographically SK was religious btw)

Right, right, you’re absolutely right. As I mentioned, a lot of F&T went over my head, and I did not understand a lot of what was said beyond the first few introductory chapters. I am the last person to claim that I understood F&T, however, that in itself is my main criticism. It seems like his thoughts and opinions are rarely stated plainly. Kierkegaard’s examination of faith was very interesting, and I enjoyed reading it, but I didn’t get as much out of it as I had hoped. I may re-read it at a later time, but right now I’m enjoying a few of the other books on my plate far too much.

Recomended Reading: The Sayings of the Desert Fathers

This book is much different than the others I’ve written about, for it is a collection of sayings from 4th Century monks, some of the first groups of organized Christian monks. Now, the very idea of sequestering yourself away in order to find God makes no sense to me, since community has played such a role in my walk with God. But one of the Godly men whom I admire was a monk for 5 years, and lent me this book in reflection of how monk-hood affected his walk. I’ve learned a few interesting things in reading these “nuggets of wisdom”. <“Bold Quotes are from the monks”>

Recomended Reading: Kierkegaard - Fear and Trembling

Recommended to me by a friend, I was promised a philosophical examination of faith, and I received exactly that. The prospect of examining faith seemed to me to be absurd, which is exactly what Kierkegaard proposes. I don’t think the leap of faith is baseless, however it does require a leap of thought that few things can compare to. The thing that I gleaned from his writings more than anything else is the observation that beliefs can be held because of facts, experiences, or feelings; which he refers to as “The Finite” . Namely, the things we know, understand, and can prove. But faith requires a trust in “The Infinite”, and cannot be proven or quantified. I like to think of God as “The Infinite”, and it gives a power to my faith that I hadn’t attributed to it before. I’ve always thought of faith as something fragile, which must be constantly maintained. But now I see that faith can be a rock on which we can depend upon.

Psalm 55:22 - Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.

The only thing that unsettled me about Kierkegaard was this: In spite of his admiration, respect, and awe of faith, he himself cannot make that leap. He maintained that he won’t allow himself to believe. How then can his view be so enlightening and encouraging? It amazes me what prevents people from trusting in God. Oh, and I also found him somewhat hard to follow, be it the loss in translation, or his inability to speak plainly, I feel that I missed out on a lot of his points, simply because I couldn’t keep up. My loss. (Apologies for a lack of direct quotes, I returned the borrowed copy of Fear and Trembling, a hasty decision in hindsight.)

God and Geeks: Summer Plans

Oh man! Only 2 more days until the summer begins….seriously, I cannot wait. Two days seems like forever, even though I don’t REALLY have to much work to do until then, I just have to stick it out. Here are some of the things/possibilities that are happening this summer:

  • Job Number 1: Working AV Tech for the college, about 35 hours a week of me sitting at a desk 70% of the time. I plan on ting a lot of work done this summer.
  • Job Number 2: Working gigs for Sotille Theatre. This will be more sporadic, but it should fill in the gaps between working at CofC.
  • Project 1: Legend Character creator. I’m writing it in Java, just for fun, and because it may help some people who are interested in getting into DnD.
  • Project 2: Freedom Box. A new initiative, they need people who can test their software, maybe doing some simple code debugging and contributions.
  • Certifications. I don’t know if this one will happen, it depends on how much it costs to take the tests. But getting certified would increase my chances of getting a job, and fill some much needed gaps in my knowledge.
  • Journey Bible Study. Over the summer, the leadership team of the Journey, along with many of the regulars is meeting for a weekly bible study. I’m really looking forward to that, and surrounding myself with people who can encourage me in my walk. It’s difficult to find people who are on fire for God, which is a real shame.
  • Random coffee meets. I’ve met a lot of interesting people, and look forward to discussion and debate over the course of the summer.
  • Relaxation/Reading. My reading list grows ever longer! I’ve got so much that I’m looking forward to reading and learning.
  • And of course, lots and lots of video games. I can’t wait to try out some of the new indie games.

I’ll try to keep to weekly posts, if not more so. On my  professional blog, I’ll be detailing more about the computer and software parts, if your curious, go check it out here.

Trek Talk: The Vidiians

I LOVE the way that Star Trek can take a theme, and run with it in order to make a point. Almost every race/entity/or situation is representative of something, or a commentary on some aspect of humanity/life.

God and Geeks: Everything is Permitted….

Last week I decided to try something new and smoke a cigar. It was interesting, and I enjoyed keeping my hands occupied, watching the smoke fly around, and tasting the smoke. But more than the cigar itself, it was the atmosphere and mindset that smoking cigars created. It seems as though they exist primarily to facilitate conversation and social interaction, similar to fishing or bowling.

Star Trek Stupidity

What the heck does the Federation build their consoles out of? They keep exploding, every time there is a battle or power surge. WHO PUTS A MAIN POWER LONE BEHIND A TOUCH SCREEN! What if Ipads were designed that way?

“Oh man, that red shirt bit the dust…..I tried to tell him that Apple doesn’t support flash….but ensign Ricky didn’t listen!”

God and Geeks: Coffee Ministry

This past semester has started a new chapter in my life, one that was unexpected and changed. I’ve started meeting with people, engaging in “coffee ministry” which may be a little pretentious, but that title tickles me, so that’s how I’ll refer to it. It started when Colin Kerr offered to get coffee with me. He specifically sought me out, and initiated a conversation with me. We talked for about an hour or so, and by the end of that conversation, I knew that I wanted to be a part of this man’s vision for the College of Charleston.

It seems like such a small thing, but pursuing a specific time for conversation with interesting people has been extremely beneficial for me. I’ve met TONS of amazing people, from Satanists to Sorority girls. Today, at our leadership meeting, one of the leaders claimed that they didn’t have much experience with ministry, or that they wouldn’t be able to minister to people. To them, I would say that it may seem daunting, but most people WANT to explain their beliefs and opinions. We need only listen.
